BDI reasoning with normative considerations

چکیده
Systems of autonomous and self-interested agents interacting to achieve individual and collective goals may exhibit undesirable or unexpected behaviour if left unconstrained. Norms have been widely proposed as a means of defining and enforcing societal constraints by using the deontic concepts of obligations, permissions and prohibitions to describe what must, may and should not be done, respectively. However, recent efforts to provide norm-enabled agent architectures that guide plan choices suffer from interfering with an agent’s reasoning process, and thus limit the agent’s autonomy more than is required by the norms alone. In this paper we describe an extension of the BeliefsDesires-Intentions (BDI) architecture that enables normative reasoning used to help agents choose and customise plans taking norms into account. The paper makes three significant contributions: we provide a formal framework to represent norms compactly and to manage them; we present a formal characterisation of the normative positions induced by norms of an agent’s execution within a given time period; and finally, we put forth a mechanism for plan selection and ranking taking into consideration a set of normative restrictions.

BDI+C — an architecture for normative, autonomous agents
In this paper, we describe a novel agent architecture for normative multi-agent systems which is based on multi-context systems. It models the three modalities of Rao and Georgeff’s BDI agents as individual contexts and adds a fourth one for commitments. This new component is connected to all other mental attitudes via two sets of bridge rules, injecting formulae into it and modifying the BDI c...

متن کاملNorm Regulation in Collaborative Virtual Environments by Normative Multi-agent Systems
Different types of research have been done on multi-agent systems regarding normative systems. This research addresses the enforcement of norms by a multi-agent system. More specifically this thesis investigates the question whether or not it is possible for a normative multi-agent system to regulate the norms in a collaborative virtual environment. The collaborative virtual environment used in...
متن کاملDemoralizing causation
Introduction There have recently been a number of strong claims that normative considerations, broadly construed, influence many philosophically important folk concepts and perhaps are even a constitutive component of various cognitive processes. writes that " [m]oral considerations actually figure in the fundamental competencies people use to make sense of the world, " while Pettit and Knobe (...
متن کاملCon ict-free normative agents using assumption-based argumentation
Argumentation can serve as a useful abstraction for various agent activities and in particular for agent reasoning. In this paper we further support this claim by mapping a form of normative BDI agents onto assumption-based argumentation. By way of this mapping we equip our agents with the capability of resolving con icts amongst norms, beliefs, desires and intentions. This con ict resolution i...
